Disability insurance is protection for you income that can be applied either in the short term or the long term. It is used to replace your income when you are not working.
Health insurance is used to pay doctors and hospitals. It does not cover other bills and expenses. Disability Insurance pays you when you run out of Sick Days and Sick Leave so that, if you are out of work, you can still cover your essential bills and expenses.
FMLA protects your job while you take off up to 12 weeks in a 12 month period. However, FMLA might not offer paid leave. Income protection does. FMLA can be used when a family member has a medical issue but, your current income protection policy protects only you or your spouse’s salary. If you have Sick Leave it may convert to FMLA.
Disability Insurance pays you in cash to cover your every day bills and expenses if you need to take off from work. It pays on top of the benefits you receive from the Board of Education and your health insurance, neither of which will cover all of your expenses. In addition, the Hartford offers exceptionally low rates, including low rates for spousal coverage.
The Hartford Disability Insurance for Spouses can cover your spouse’s salary if he or she is out of work.
If your spouse is an independent contractor or owns their own company, they often do not have disability insurance. If your spouse needs to take days off from work due to an illness or accident, they will be missing pay.
Health insurance is meant to cover the cost of medical bills – it pays the doctors, not you. When you are out of work, it does not cover the cost of bills and expenses.
The Hartford policy through PGCEA is the only insurance company that offers disability insurance for spouses. Individual plans may pay up to $4000 a month in benefits. The Hartford offers protection with rates averaging $7.00 to $30.00 per pay depending on their age and salary.
